Arthur Berry (1925 to 1994)

Arthur Berry is the most famous artist from Potteries of the 20th century. He is often compare to LS Lowry and this was played out in a show at The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery in 2015-16 Lowry ad Berry: Observers of Urban Life.

Arthur was a polymath able to express his visual language through art, poetry, plays and published books, he was also an expert auditor, recording many of his monologues.

Barewall are delighted to work with the estate and have been championing Arthur Berry's artistic output since 2010. All of his published works are available to buy alongside his original art. We are also working with the estate to bring to light some of Arthur's projects which he had ready to go.

"The evenings were a cinderous grey, turning to purple and rust. The night sky was filled with a luminous beauty, against which the great kilns were etched in blackness. The air in the streets smelled of smoke, horse muck and aniseed. Every few yards there was a public house. I could feel the pulse of the place beating in the pug mills by the canal. It was like a walled city, covered in soot surrounded by shord rucks and pit tips, enormous dark triangles that glowed and burned in the wind."
