William Blake was born in 1874 and was a photographer based in Longton, North Staffordshire. His most famous photographs are called the "smokies" - the landscape of smoking chimneys and industry which once dominated The Potteries.

He also travelled to adjacent towns, villages, and rural countryside, taking photographs. His pictures tell us stories about people and places in and around North Staffordshire. They reveal his concern for social issues, curiosity to explore, and obsession with recording his surroundings.
